Getting started
- Open Look MCP. It lives in the menu bar (the small window with a sparkle) and has no Dock icon.
- Under Connect Your AI, click Copy Setup Prompt and paste it into your AI agent. The agent adds Look MCP to its own settings.
- Click Try It to see how showing a window and pointing work, or ask your AI for help with something on your screen.
Common questions
Which AI apps work with Look MCP?
Any app that supports MCP servers (Model Context Protocol) and can read pictures. Agents that can edit their own settings, such as coding agents, set themselves up from the setup prompt. For other apps, open Manual Setup, pick your app and click Copy Settings.
Download or App Store?
Both are the same app, and both update themselves. The App Store keeps its version up to date. The version you download here is signed and checked by Apple (notarized) too, and looks for a new version once a day: it shows you what's new, and after your click it downloads the update, installs it and starts again. Check for Updates… in the menu looks right away. Use one or the other, not both.
Can my AI see my screen without me?
No. Every look opens a window that names the AI app and says why it's asking. You then pick the window in macOS's own window picker, or click Not Now. Your AI gets a picture of that one window and nothing else.
Can it click or type?
No. It can only show a ring on your screen where it means, with a short label. You do the clicking and typing.
What does “Share for 5 Minutes” do?
Your AI can then look at the same window again during the next five minutes without asking, for example after each step it guides you through. You choose it with every request; Share Once gives it a single picture. The panel shows what's shared, and Stop Sharing ends it at once. macOS also shows its own sharing indicator in the menu bar while it lasts.
How does it guide me through several steps?
Your AI can mark several things at once with numbered rings. If something has to be typed, the ring's label shows the text with a Copy button. A ring stays until you've clicked there; the tick on its label marks the step done by hand. A small status box at the bottom of the screen shows how many steps are done and when your AI is looking at the result. Its Done button ticks off all steps, and Stop Sharing ends everything.
Does it need Screen Recording permission?
No. Look MCP uses the window picker built into macOS. Picking a window there is the permission, and it covers that window only.
Troubleshooting
My AI says it can't see pictures
Your AI app has to be able to read pictures that a tool returns. Most current agents can. If yours can't, it still gets the app's name and the window's title, but not what's in the window.
The ring is in the wrong place
The ring points at a spot in the last picture. If the window has changed since, for example because you scrolled or opened a dialog, ask your AI to look again. The ring follows the window when you move it.
My AI says the window isn't on screen any more
The window was closed, minimized or moved to another desktop. Bring it back and ask your AI to look again.
My AI says it can't reach Look MCP
- Check that Look MCP is running: its icon is in the menu bar and the panel says Ready for your AI.
- Restart your AI app, or reload its MCP servers, after changing its settings or after updating Look MCP.
I can't find the menu bar icon
Open Look MCP again from Spotlight or the Applications folder. It tells you where its icon is, or that it's hidden because the menu bar is full, and how to make room.
